Free App: Teach Young Children Computer Coding with Daisy the Dinosaur

I have introduced several apps teaching kids computer language and coding, including some free apps. Each app has pros and cons, and each app has its target users. Today I have another free coding app teaching kids coding. It is called Daisy the Dinosaur. It is designed by the same developer of Hopscotch, which is also a free app teaching kids coding.

What are the differences between Daisy the Dinosaur and Hopscotch?

First they both are very intuitive to use. Kids don’t have to know anything about coding to use the app. Both apps use visual blocks to show kids the logic of the programming language. Also both apps are designed to encourage girls to learn coding. These are reflected in some aesthetics of the app design, such as the color choices of the dinosaur. However, the apps don’t alienate boys. Boys and girls will both enjoy the games.

Daisy the Dinosaur is more designed for younger kids. Children as young as 4 or 5 can play with the dinosaur. There are less coding concepts in Daisy the Dinosaur than in Hopscotch. Each concept doesn’t go as deep as what is in Hopscotch neither.

There are two options in the app when kids first start the app: Free-Play mode and Challenge Mode. For kids have no coding experience, it is best to start with Challenge mode. It is essentially a teaching mode by offering challenges. The challenges are to make Daisy the Dinosaur make different moves. For example, the first challenge is to move Daisy forward, and the 2nd challenge is to make Daisy turn 180 degree. Kids will learn the basic programming commends and concepts while working on the challenges.

After they have learned the fundamental concepts and building blocks in programming, kids can move on to Free Play mode, where they can decide how they want Daisy move.

Once they feel they are done with Daisy the Dinosaur, kids can move on to Hopscotch, which is also a free app. In Hopscotch, kids will be able to learn more functions in coding.

Daisy the Dinosaur works on iPad, it is FREE on the App Store.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store button provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The button works for all countries.
